STDs: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a disease that affects women for a variety of reasons. No matter what the reason, however, having the disease is not a pleasant experience and seeking immediate treatment with the onset of symptoms is a must. Since the disease is usually brought on by the presence of another sexually transmitted disease, or STD, it is equally important that women maintain regular check-ups to catch any disease in its early stages – thereby aiming to avoid developing pelvic inflammatory disease. There are treatment options for the disease available, however.

More Information about Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease is at its most basic an infection in the upper genital tract and of the reproductive organs, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. While pelvic inflammatory disease can be brought on by an STD that has been left untreated, it can also be naturally occurring in some women. However, once a woman has developed pelvic inflammatory disease, it is extremely important that she seek treatment as soon as possible. If left untreated, pelvic inflammatory disease can cause a host of unpleasant complications. Some of these complications include infertility, as the disease does affect a woman’s reproductive system. Also, if left untreated, the disease can even become life threatening.

The most common age group of women who are affected by the disease is reported to be those between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five. The two sexually transmitted diseases that tend to be most responsible for causing pelvic inflammatory disease are Chlamydia and gonorrhea, both of which have similar symptoms but also may be asymptomatic for some people. It can take days or months for an untreated STD to lead to pelvic inflammatory disease. Some of the symptoms of the disease include pain during sexual activity, burning, fever, and other symptoms of infection. Other causes besides an STD include frequent douching, which cleanses a woman of naturally beneficial bacteria.

Pelvic inflammatory disease can be treated with antibiotics or antimicrobials, but since the disease can have such serious complications, it is always best to try to catch it in its early stages. This is why frequent check-ups are so important to every woman.
